It is true that this country is war weary, but they are not so war weary that they would hurt the military by wanting to pull out of Iraq early. That would cause another Vietnam. The American people do not want that to happen.
I think that the people that want out of Iraq are a vocal miority. These people are the holdoveres of the 196's anti war movement. The are of a certain age, that came of age in the late sixties early seventies. The further away from the Vietnam War that country gets, the fewer people from that era that run for office. The ones that remain in office are getting older and soon may decide to retire. As long as there are sixties holdovers in office, the anti-war groups will remain strong.
Most American do not want to see the U.S. militaty come off lookin as bad as it did after that war. It took until the first gulf war for our military to get its grove and swagger back. It took until the late 1980's for the country tostrt to get over the Vietnam War and to start to recognize the sacrifice that those men went through.
I have said this in many other places. The American military is the ultimat sports team. I would wager to say that most Americans have a favorite sports team. I would also say that they feel better when that particular team win rather that when it loses. The Amereican want to see a strong military with its confidence high. The ability needs to be there for them to have equipment and the training to win in any situation they are sent into. I fear that if there is the democratic sweep that every one is predicting, then there is a more thatn a fair shot that the military budget will be seriosly slashed. This will lead to a serious decline in the skill and ability of our fine fighting men and women. That would be a sad state of affairs.
